VDM secures Jurien Bay Resort contract

Multi-disciplined construction and engineering company, VDM Group Ltd, has been awarded the design and construction contract for Taggart Development’s $34 million Jurien Bay Beach Resort.

Keytown Constructions, part of the VDM Group’s construction division, will manage the design and construction of the beachfront project, with construction scheduled to start in March.

The resort, which will be the largest resort in the area, will comprise 106 strata-titled apartments and villas plus resort facilities including a tropical swimming pool, tennis courts, parklands and boat bays.

Other VDM Group member companies, including Prism Design + Management, Ewing Consulting Engineers and Van Der Meer Consulting, will also be involved in the project in the areas of design documentation, civil design and structural engineering respectively.

VDM Group chief executive John Farrell said the project was the biggest individual building contract the company had won, and it demonstrated the group’s 'concept to completion' model.

“It’s a good job for the company over the next few financial years, and it fits our design and construct model. So we think it’s the sort business we need to keep winning as we go forward,” Mr Farrell told WA Business News.

Mr Farrell said the company had spent the past few months aggressively pursing other large scale construction projects, and expected to release details of two new projects – one in Western Australia and one international project – at the end of February.

VDM Group listed on the ASX in February 2006 and has since completed several acquisitions, including Darwin-based EcOz Environmental Services, Queensland-based civil and structural engineering consultancy Barlow Gregg & Associates and Perth-based Cape Crushing.

The group has been awarded a number of contracts in recent months, including a civil and structural design project for the new Park Hyatt Hotel in Tbilisi, Georgia, and a building contract at a Darwin high school.
