The University of Western Australia has taken its long-running legal dispute with Dr Bruce Gray, a former staff member and founder of profitable biotechnology company Sirtex Medical, to the High Court.

As a former employee of Universities and someone with spin out experience, I think this totally sends the wrong message to future innovators. Major UK and US Universities have realised that it is far more remunerative to encourage innovation without taking a stake. Underpaid academics should feel that they can build clusters of success with others, rather than be pursued with law suits. A very sad saga for UWA...

One could not say Bruce Gray is an underpaid academic. There is more to this whole saga than you realise.

Sad and regrettable. More about the egoes of those involved than the merits (or even the financial rewards). There will be little benefit out of this for anyone other than the lawyers, no matter how the judgement falls.
