Joe Oxley, Owner,
The Richardson Hotel & Spa
Favourite holiday destination?
Recently I had a memorable stay at Kauri Cliffs, on New Zealand’s north island. [It’s] ideal for a relaxing holiday, with a great golf course. Hong Kong, my home for 17 years, will always be a special destination.
Favourite place in WA to take a short break?
I discovered unique Broome last year, during the Broome Racing Carnival, and am booked again for the same event next month.
What has been your biggest travel disaster and what did you learn from it?
I have been very fortunate not to have experienced any real disasters – the worst to have happened, was my bags going astray, on three occasions at the same airport; now I avoid Heathrow.
Pet hates when travelling on airplanes?
Malfunctioning TV monitors and screaming kids.
How often do you travel? Is it usually for business or pleasure?
On average one trip each month. I usually travel to promote The Richardson Hotel in the eastern states and overseas, but there are also a few holiday trips.
What’s always in your carry-on luggage?
A notebook computer, Blackberry, a novel, toiletries and a change of clothing, in case my bags should go astray.
Where have you always wanted to travel/holiday but haven’t managed to yet?
Argentina is high on my to-do list.
Favourite overseas hotel?
The Oberoi on Lake Pichola in Udaipur, India – it’s a very special place.
You wish Perth could be more like?
I actually like Perth the way it is – some daylight saving would be a nice bonus.
What was the last book you read?
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I’m now on the second book of the popular trilogy.
What CD did you just upload to your iPod ?
Back to Black by Amy Winehouse. It was released a few years ago, but I’m only now appreciating her talent.
