Mining and construction services company Thiess has secured its second contract over the Gorgon gas project, taking the total value of its work on the operation to $1 billion.
Today the Leighton-owned company said it had been contracted by project manager Chevron for site preparation works and construction of temporary facilities on Barrow Island for the $50 billion project.
The contract is valued at around $500 million.
Thiess WA general manager Ric Buratto said the project scope includes the preparation of finished of earthwork levels for the gas plant, reticulation of site services and a material offloading facilities causeway.
He added that the company will use various local WA companies to supply specialist work packages including various temporary facilities buildings.
Work on the contract is expected to start once all necessary government approvals have been received and a final investment decision is made by the partners - Chevron, ExxonMobil and Shell - in the project.
Last month Thiess, along with joint venture partners Perth-based Decmil Group and UK-listed Kentz, secured a $500 million contract to design and construct an accomodation village.
So far, Chevron has award around $1.8 billion worth of contracts for the Gorgon project including the latest Thiess contract.
A final investment decision on the project is expected in coming months.
