THIESS Services has potentially added $325 million to its project portfolio this week with the company signing a new alliance contract with Western Power.
Thiess Services is set to upgrade and maintain Western Power’s electrical distribution network throughout metropolitan Perth and South West regional WA.
The contract is initially two years long with an option to extend the contract with three optional one-year extensions, and is worth up to $325 million over the five years.
Leighton Holdings subsidiary Thiess has been involved with Western Power since 2005, carrying out upgrades and construction projects on the South West interconnected network.
Thiess Services general manager Michael Wright said the alliance shows the depth of expertise in the working relationship between Thiess and Western Power.
Thiess is involved in electrical transmission and distribution networks in both Western Australia and Queensland.
This week’s announcement follows February’s cancellation of the Power Alliance between Western Power, Downer EDI and Tenix.
The Power Alliance was the largest in the corporation’s history and was terminated following the deferral and reduction in scope of a number of capital projects.
Western Power cited surplus staff capacity after the company’s capital works volume was reduced as a result of the global financial crisis.
At the same time as cancelling the contract with Downer EDI and Tenix, Western Power announced it would maintain its only other alliance.
The Western Power and Transfield Services contract is a customer-funded distribution and transmission work contract worth $190 million.
