The State Government has announced the shortlist of contractors invited to tender for the construction of the first stage of Western Australia's first floating dock at the Australian Marine Complex in Henderson.
The four short-listed companies are the Ausclad Group of Companies Ltd (AGC), Forgacs Shipyard, John Holland Pty Ltd and Tenix Shipbuilding.
Science and Innovation Minister Francis Logan said the tender called for the successful bidder to design, build, test, deliver and commission the first stage of the floating dock.
"In addition to the all-encompassing nature of the tender, the State Government is seeking a very high level of local content in this contract," Mr Logan said.
The contract is for the first 99m section of the dock, which could eventually be up to 230m long.
Construction of the floating dock is part of the State Government's $90million upgrade to the multi-user capability at the Common User Facility (CUF) within the AMC.
"The first stage of the floating dock will add significantly to the capability of the AMC," the Minister said.
"It will provide WA with a fantastic opportunity to bid for a whole range of additional maintenance and construction jobs across the marine, defence and resources sectors."
The second stage of the floating dock will depend on the Federal Government's decision on the location for the consolidation and integration of the Royal Australian Navy's amphibious ships.
The Carpenter Government is leading a campaign to emphasise the benefits of building these ships in Australia and, in particular, at the AMC.
