SYNERGY SEEKING TENDERS FOR ELECTRICITY SUPPLY
INCLUDES UP TO 50MW OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
Synergy today launched a tender process seeking new wholesale electricity supply contracts, and also called for expressions of interest for the supply of energy and capacity outside the tender process.
Managing Director, Jim Mitchell told the 2006 Energy in Western Australia Conference Synergy was seeking offers for wholesale electricity supply contracts of up to 400 megawatts (MW), to be available from October 2010.
"We are also seeking offers for the supply of up to 50MW of renewable energy from 2009," Mr Mitchell said. "The supply of renewable energy must be commercially viable for Synergy."
"Additionally, we are active in the market and keen to secure additional sources of energy and capacity for the contestable market, and invite proposals from interested parties if they have energy or capacity available throughout this period."
Mr Mitchell said an Information Memorandum about the process for the supply of 400MW has been issued by Synergy and is available on Synergy's web site at www.synergyenergy.com.au.
"Following the disaggregation of Western Power, Synergy's wholesale electricity supplies are initially being supplied under a transitional contract with Verve Energy.
"The volumes supplied by Verve will decline over time, and a "displacement" mechanism requires Synergy to utilise competitive sourcing arrangements to fulfil its energy requirements."
Mr Mitchell said the process for the 400MW tender will be in two phases, with requests for indicative proposals due in November 2006, and final tenders
by June 2007. The successful tender will be announced in August 2007.
"All prospective suppliers have an opportunity to compete in this process. This includes coal-fired, gas-fired and renewable generation. We're not stipulating the source of energy in this process, we're inviting proposals from interested parties."
"We will release full details of the process for the acquisition of up to 50MW of renewable energy by 30 September 2006."
Mr Mitchell said today's announcement marked another milestone in Western Australia's increasingly competitive wholesale electricity market.
