THE Red Cross Blood Service’s Summer Heroes Blood Rush challenge has finished for another year with the organisation exceeding its goal of 3,000 donations.
In all, 3,630 blood donations were received from the employees of Western Australia and the Northern Territories business community.
The challenge aimed to get as many donations as possible from the business community.
Curtin University made it back-to-back wins in the challenge with 256 donations.
The WA Police Service came second with 219 donations.
The top five was rounded out by the National Australian Bank with 128 donations, BankWest with 90 and Rotary with 81.
Indeed, besides the National and BankWest the other major banks in town also took part with ANZ and Challenge tying for 19th place with 24 donations each and the Commonwealth Bank in 52nd place with 14 donations.
St George, StateWest Credit, Home and AMP also made the donor board.
In all 403 WA businesses took part in the challenge and 125 businesses from the Northern Territory also participated. In the Northern Territory there were 760 blood donations.
The centre winners were:
Perth Whole Blood Centre – BankWest with 81 donations;
Perth Apheresis Donor Centre – Curtin University with 48;
Whitford Blood Donor Centre – WA Police Service with six;
Midland Blood Donor Centre – Department of Land Administration with 54;
Carousel Blood Donor Centre – Curtin University with 44;
Blood Donor Centre – WA Police Service with 18;
Rockingham Blood Donor Centre – Western Mining Corporation with 20;
Albany Blood Donor Centre – Albany Hospice with 25;
Bunbury Blood Donor Centre – National Australia Bank with 19;
Kalgoorlie Blood Donor Centre – WA Police Service with 19; and
Geraldton Blood Donor Centre – JG Engineering with 23 donations.
Based on figures from the Red Cross, the donors that took part in the challenge could help to save the lives of 10,890 people. A single donation can be used to help make 15 life saving products.
