Study in success

AT just 30 years of age, Doug Ockerby has worked his way up through the real estate profession to run WA’s largest independently owned realtor.

Mr Ockerby is a director of Ockerby Real Estate, which has offices stretching from Mandurah to Karratha and employs 75 staff.

He was nominated by public relations company Porter Novelli’s Warrick Hazeldine, who said Mr Ockerby was one of his clients.

“But that aside, he is a real leader in his field,” Mr Hazeldine said.

“He drove the merger with John Franklyn and Associates, which was a big coup.

“He also completed a Masters of Business Administration, which is something of a rarity in his field.”

Indeed, Mr Ockerby lists the merger with John Franklyn and Associates as his most significant business achievement.

It allowed his company to relocate its Noranda office to Scarborough Beach, placing Ockerby Real Estate along the northern coastal strip to tie in with its other offices in Cottesloe, Padbury and Quinns Rock.

Having real estate offices in Perth’s northern beachside suburbs is strategically important because those areas are showing considerable property value growth.

Mr Ockerby’s nomination for Business News’ 40 Under 40 program was supported by Real Estate Institute of WA deputy chief executive officer Neville Pozzi, EBM Insurance director Jeff Adams and Ockerby Real Estate consultant John Franklyn.

Mr Ockerby said his MBA had helped him grow his business.

“Over the past 12 months sales have grown by 40 per cent and property management by 43 per cent due to the implementation of ideas learnt from my MBA studies,” he said.

Mr Ockerby listed his other major professional accomplishments as acquiring 180 properties from a northern coastal real estate agent and gaining the respect of staff members – some 20 years older than he is.
