Strategic Marine has gotten a leg-up into the growing European wind vessel and passenger ferry markets through a collaborative agreement with UK-based vessel design firm BMT Nigel Gee.
The Perth-based shipbuilder announced today a teaming agreement with BMT, which will provide Strategic access to the UK-based company’s full range of offshore wind vessel and passenger ferry designs.
Strategic’s chief operating officer, Terry O’Connor, said the agreement would expand the company’s portfolio of vessels.
“Having attained significant success in the offshore oil and gas sector we can use our experience to work with BMT Nigel Gee developing world-leading solutions for operators around the world,” Mr O’Connor said in a statement.
Mr O’Connor said Strategic had identified the wind vessel and passenger ferry markets as new market opportunities in a comprehensive market research project completed last year.
“Our agreement with BMT Nigel Gee sets us on a path of meeting our objective to be a world leader in these markets,” he said.
BMT technical director Edward Dudson said the relationship was an “attractive proposition” for the renewable energy sector given increasingly strong demand in Europe.
“Strategic Marine has large facilities in Asian and as a consequence is able to provide very quick deliveries,” Mr Dudson said.
“While our initial focus is on the offshore wind and passenger ferry markets, we will also be working together with Strategic Marine to identify other opportunities.”
