WEST Australian opposition leader Matt Birney and his leadership challenger Paul Omodei appear set for a leadership showdown tomorrow. Mr Birney and Mr Omodei spent the week shoring up their respective numbers for what observers predict will be a close run race. Mr Omodei resigned as deputy leader late last year, after being found guilty of a charge related to shooting off his son’s thumb during a rabbit cull. Both men claim to have the overwhelming support of their colleagues. The challenge from Mr Omodei comes after a series of gaffes by Mr Birney, which culminated in his sacking last week of shadow attorney-general Sue Walker from the front bench, after she publicly criticised his communication skills.
