More than $19 million in government funds will be invested to create 96 new homes for the aged in Mandurah in a joint project between the Department of Housing and The Bethanie Group.
The $19.44 million is funded from stage 2 of the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Package. It brings to 852, the total number of social housing units created in the South Metropolitan area, using State and Commonwealth Stimulus Package funding.
Under the proposal, the Department of Housing will fund 96 units in Maclaggan Turn. The site adjoins an existing aged care facility managed by Bethanie, which is a registered growth provider with the department. Registered growth providers comply with strict operating and management guidelines.
The design of the new complex comprises of two two-storey buildings each containing 48 units and separated by community open space.
Housing Minister Troy Buswell said the project was a good example of the state government working in co-operation with the private sector to build much-needed housing for the elderly in an area of growing need.
"We've made it our goal to produce 20,000 social housing units by 2020 and this goes some way to achieving that," Mr Buswell said.
"One of the strategies recommended by the Social Housing Taskforce to better meet the housing needs of the community was more collaboration between Government and private sector.
"It's a way of ensuring we get the best value for money for taxpayers, and the best facilities for those in need.
"Just as importantly, it's a boost for local builders, generating 40 jobs onsite during construction, and 25 for apprentices or trainees."
