Halfway through the year, the Seven Network is way out in front of the competition, hosting nine of the year’s top 10 programs since February 11 (excluding the Easter period).
The only program outside the Seven stable to make the ratings top 10 list is Network Ten’s weight loss reality program, The Biggest Loser, with the show’s finale attracting the largest audience of any program this year (279,458 viewers).
Seven’s joint bid with Ten for the AFL broadcast rights in January last year has been a clear win for the network’s ratings, with five of the top 10 most-watched programs this year being football matches featuring one of the two Western Australian teams.
The network also does well on the news front, with its Sunday and weeknight news bulletins taking out fourth and fifth position, respectively.
Dancing with the Stars also makes the list, as does its weeknight current affairs program, Today Tonight.
Meanwhile, merger activity in WA has resulted in management changes at Channel Nine Perth.
WIN Corporation’s takeover of Nine prompted the resignation of the network’s general manager, Michael Mitchell, after two years in the role.
WIN’s general manager of the past seven years, Ian McRae, will now juggle both roles, having taken over management of the STW-Nine television network, effective last week.
Mr McRae has had an extensive media career spanning 29 years, including stints at West Australian Newspapers, Channel Seven and the Ten Network.
Mr Mitchell is to become a consultant with the WIN group, commencing this week.
Channel Nine Perth has also lost its sales director, Chris Eyres, who last month accepted a sales role with Austereo stations Mix 94.5 and 92.9.
WIN Corporation, which owns regional network WIN Television, bought Nine from Sunraysia Television for $163.2 million last month.
