International service provider Serco Australia will continue to manage the state’s largest prison under a new five-year contract, which includes two five-year extension options.
The state government said the contract was awarded following a competitive tender process, with Serco managing Acacia Prison since 2006.
The new contract includes an expansion of services, including an increase in prisoner program delivery and a more effective arrangement for total management of the prison, as well as tougher penalties and stricter criteria for contract breaches.
Serco will also be responsible for the facility’s maintenance and the new contract will come into play May 16, 2021.
"The new contract has a requirement for increased prisoner program delivery and I look forward to seeing how Serco will meet that new standard,” said corrective services minister Francis Logan.
"Serco will be expected to deliver a high standard of service and support the department's commitment to enhanced prisoner welfare and rehabilitation outcomes.
"The new contract also includes tougher penalties for breaching the terms of the contract and stricter criteria to ensure compliance with the state's expectations."
