THREE students and researchers with strong Western Australian connections are among the 25 recipients of the 2010 Fulbright Scholarships, allowing them to continue their studies in the US.
Leading CSIRO scientist and research director for the Australian e-Health Research Centre, Yogesan Kanagasingam, has been awarded this year’s Fulbright Senior Scholarship as a result of his innovative imaging technologies to prevent blindness. He is responsible for developing an ophthalmic imaging device, EyeScan, which is expected to replace the 150-year-old direct ophthalmoscope used by doctors. Dr Kanagasingam will spend four months at the Stanford University School of Medicine developing and validating a new ‘non-invasive’ system to screen newborn babies.
Murdoch University PhD candidate at the School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, Kathryn Napier, and Edith Cowan University graduate of the Western Australian Academy of the Performing Arts, Sam Nester, have been awarded the Western Australia Scholarship and the Postgraduate Scholarship respectively.
Ms Napier will spend 12 months at the University of Wyoming researching mistletoe distributions in WA, while Mr Nester will be undertaking a Master of Music degree at a US music institution.
