Private civil contractor Whittens has secured a $14.4 million construction contract for work associated with Roy Hill Holding's iron ore mine in the East Pilbara.
Roy Hill contracted the family-owned company to build a 3.5 kilometre-long hydraulic structure – known as the Zulu West hydraulic structure project – as well as build central transfer ponds.
The scope of work includes piping and mechanical works comprising valves and flow metres, electrical works and control systems, switch gear and fibre optic cabling.
This is part of a project, approved last year by the Environmental Protection Authority, to design, install and manage surface water diversion structures at the mine site to divert runoff around disturbance areas, provide flood protection to mining pits and enhance safety for mine workers.
Whittens chief executive Louise Whitten said the company was proud to deliver an important component of the Roy Hill iron ore project.
The Osborne Park-based company was founded by brothers Tyron and Clayton Whitten in 2001.
