Rio seeks sweeping change to NW aviation contracts

Rio Tinto said it was seeking longer term contracts for its aviation needs, seeking expressions of interest for the provision of 3000 seats per week across the north of Western Australia after a review of its current policy of one and two year agreements.

Rio Tinto today announced that it is seeking Expressions of Interest for aviation contractors able to service its Western Australian operations.
The Group is seeking contracts for aviation routes between Perth, the Pilbara and the Kimberley region of Western Australia for its diamonds, minerals and iron ore businesses.
Rio Tinto Procurement General Manager Australasia and Africa John Clark said the company has reviewed its aviation strategy and was looking to move towards longer term contracts rather than current one to two year terms.
"Rio Tinto in Western Australia spends a substantial amount each year on aviation.
The magnitude of this spend requires more than a small scale, contract management approach," Mr Clark said.
"These contracts represent a significant business opportunity for interested parties and we are seeking to secure a small core of operators to meet our growing regional business needs into the future.
"Up to now our WA requirements have been undertaken by a broad range of operators of all sizes with existing bases in the West. However, we would be very interested to hear from any national or international operator with a desire and ability to service Rio Tinto's requirements."
