Perth businessman Rick Hart, better known for his namesake retail outlets, is excited about his next venture outside of retail, crossing over to the resources sector as chairman of new gold exploration company, Renaissance Minerals.
The appointment comes some two months after Mr Hart tendered his resignation as chief executive of the Rick Hart stores and as director of parent company Clive Peeters.
Subiaco-based Renaissance is planning to acquire an Australian exploration portfolio, including tenements in the Southern Cross and the Kalgoorlie Goldfields, from Perth-based Gryphon Mineral.
The company is also in the process of acquiring an offshore gold project.
Mr Hart admits that this kind of work is new to him but he is pleased to be joined by former Rothschild and Investec resource financier Justin Tremain as managing director and Gryphon managing director Steve Parsons as a non-executive director.
"It's something I've not had any experience in and there are some good people involved so I'm looking forward to it," Mr Hart told WA Business News.
"That's what appeals to me most, these guys, some I've know for a period of time and I think they know their business and it'll be good to associate with them.
"WA has a rich inheritance in resources so one would think it's a good thing to be involved with."
After resigning from Clive Peeters, Mr Hart told WA Business News that he was working on another "exciting" retail venture which would be focused on certain product areas and involve distinctive displays.
"That (Renaissance appointment) won't stand in the way of my retail venture," he said.
"But it's very much in planning and design stages at the moment so it should be another two to three months before anything comes to fruition but it's moving along nicely."
And what does Mr Hart think he can bring to the Renaissance table?
"I think it's, I guess, is a little bit of profile," Mr Hart said.
"It's about networks and associations in business and sport.
"I've been around a few places so it gives it a bit of that.
"And hopefully bring a different perspective or business acumen.
"I've never been involved in that line of business before but I'm pretty sure the business principles remain the same."
Mr Tremain said the appointment of Mr Hart provided a strong endorsement for the company and its growth strategy.
"There is no question that Rick, through his business and sporting roles, brings profile and credibility to Renaissance at a critical time," he said.
Renaissance intends to carry out an initial public offer shortly and plans to list on the Australian Securities Exchange next quarter.
