It is good to see that there is a manufacturing project that is getting underway in Perth. As a state we are sorely under represented in manufacturing and hi-tech industries. One wonders what our children will think when they sit in a empty quarry with no more rocks to dig up and send overseas and no substantial manufacturing base. Just as they would also sit and swelter in 35 plus degree summer days and wonder why oh why didn't our forefathers create a solar industry that is at the forefront of leading edge technology when we have more than 300 days of sun, whilst in the year 2007 Germany had a viable solar industry with 30/40 days of sun!

Well said Partha Nag! I couldn't have said it better myself.

There is nothing viable about the German solar industry. Like all "succesful" solar industries, it has been heavily subsidised by the German government for so long people think it is actually a profitable business. I think what the Australian market does well is weed out the unsustainable businesses so that they can be competitive on a world stage. We should stick with what we are good at and encourage this without trying to put our hand into any old crackpot idea that comes along. I hope Quickstep can be an example of how to succeed.
