A consortium that includes Perth business Georgiou Group is first in line to build a $165 million train station at Midland, while the company also won a $115 million New South Wales road contract.
The Midland Junction Alliance was today named the preferred proponent to deliver Metronet’s new Midland station, expected to be built by mid-2023.
The alliance is led by South Africa's McConnell Dowell and includes Georgiou, Arcadis and BG&E.
A formal contract is expected to be awarded later this year, with the alliance is set to demolish the existing 53-year-old station and design and build a new facility between Helena and Cale streets.
It's expected the new Midland station will be used by more than 3,000 daily commuters once open, with this figure forecast to grow to 3,700 by 2031.
The station will have three platforms to cater for six railcars; a pedestrian overpass connecting both sides of the railway; a bus interchange; a multi-storey car park; and cycling facilities.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the project would bring an economic, social, and environmental boost to Midland, as well as support local jobs.
The new station is also expected to improve connections to Midland Gate Shopping Centre and Midland Health Campus.
“Midland is an important retail, commercial and medical hub and this project will allow the station to continue playing a central role connecting visitors with these businesses and services,” Ms Saffioti said.
The project is jointly funded by the federal and state governments, each contributing $82.5 million.
The new Midland station was included in the federal government’s $110 billion, 10-year infrastructure and investment plan.
Federal Member for Hasluck Ken Wyatt said the project would drive investment in the region and support local businesses.
“Hasluck residents and businesses can look forward to welcoming an increase in tourism with the streamlined connection into Perth’s CBD,” he said.
“The train service from Midland to Perth is vital in ensuring our region is connected and accessible for both local residents and businesses.”
The Midland Station project is being led by DevelopmentWA.
The Midland Junction Alliance was named preferred contractor ahead of a consortium comprising Downer EDI and SMEC Australia.
East coast win
Also today, Georgiou was picked for a $115 million contract in NSW, building the Newell Highway road upgrade in the Parkes Bypass project.
It will be a 10.5 kilometre section of road.
Georgiou eastern region executive general manager Gary Georgiou said the company had nearly completed work on a highway upgrade nearby.
“Our experienced team is in the final stages of completing the New England Highway Upgrade at Bolivia Hill and will transition onto our Parkes project, bringing with them a wealth of technical and complex bridge construction expertise,” he said.
“This project is what Georgiou really cuts it’s teeth on - a regional bulk earthworks bridge project with a key client who we have worked closely with on multiple projects over the past five years.”
