A proposal to install a giant observation wheel on the Swan River foreshore has received enthusiastic support from two committees of the City of Perth.
Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi says the 60-metre high Wheel of Perth, to be erected to the west of Barrack Square, is set to become a major city attraction.
"The Wheel of Perth, which is being proposed by World Tourist Attractions Ltd (WTA), will activate the foreshore and provide spectacular views of the city and the river," Ms Scaffidi said.
"The wheel will add an element of fun and excitement that is sure to appeal both to the people of Perth and visitors to the city while we await development of the Perth Waterfront project.
"When lit up at night, the wheel will be a spectacular addition to the city skyline.
"It will provide a real focal point in an area that is soon to be transformed into a showpiece recreational and tourism locality."
The proposal to install the Wheel of Perth was approved by the Council's Finance and Budget Committee and the Planning Committee tonight and will be considered at a meeting of the full Council on 22 April.
Planning approval would also be required from the WA Planning Commission.
The City of Perth will seek to lease the riverfront land from the State Government and then on-lease the site to WTA.
There will be no cost to the City of Perth and WTA has undertaken to cover the cost of any site rehabilitation.
