Perth has moved up in the rankings of the world's most expensive cities this year as strong economic conditions bump up the cost of living.
The city came in at number 53, up 31 places from last year in the latest worldwide cost of living survey by Mercer, led by the head of the company's information product solutions business Rob Knox.
"Strong economic conditions in the resource-rich states of Western Australia and Queensland, in particular, have continued to experience increased demand for goods and services through the influx of both people and capital contributing to upward pressure on costs in Brisbane and Perth," Mr Knox said.
Brisbane jumped 29 places to rank 57 while Sydney was Australia's most expensive city at 15, up six places.
Melbourne came in at 36 after gaining 28 places while Adelaide remained the least costly city in Australia at 73 despite jumping 23 places.
"A weakening US dollar coupled with the sustained appreciation of the Australian dollar, has really pushed Australian cities further up the ranks," Mr Knox said.
"The Australian dollar has strengthened by almost 14 per cent against the US dollar over the past 12 months, but relative to other global destinations Australia fares quite well.
"This cost of living survey is targeted to multi-national employers with a global workforce. If you look at some of the major cities in our region - Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo - Australian cities remain a competitive location to send employees and establish and grow business."
Mercer's survey covers 143 cities across six continents and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location including housing, transport, food, clothing and entertainment.
Overall, Moscow was the world's most expensive city while Tokyo, London, Oslo, Hong Kong and Milan were in the top 10.
In the bottom 10 were Karachi, Johannesburg, Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Winston-Salem in the US.
