The announcement is below:
The $55.8million upgrade of Kalgoorlie Hospital is a step closer with the appointment of architects to provide the design and documentation for the hospital redevelopment.
Health Minister Dr Kim Hames said that awarding of the $1.9million contract to Peter Hunt & Lyons Architects showed the redevelopment project was progressing well.
"The Kalgoorlie Hospital redevelopment is vital for the Goldfields and the Liberal-National Government is committed to delivering this project on schedule by 2012," Dr Hames said.
"The architects will work with the Project Control Group to develop the detailed design of the project before the main redevelopment works begin next year.
"The redevelopment will offer a range of benefits including a new Emergency Department, a new palliative care unit with courtyard and creation of a hospital entrance."
Peter Hunt & Lyons Architects would bring strong design capability and sound experience in hospital redevelopment to the complex project.
The Minister said the selection of the project architect followed on from the appointment last month of a builder to carry out the forward works package.
"The forward works have begun and include the replacement and upgrade of the emergency generator sets and flood-proofing near the current Emergency Department," he said.
"With the architects appointment, the Project Control Group can begin planning and delivering the major elements of the redevelopment for the community of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the surrounding region."
Kalgoorlie MLA John Bowler welcomed the announcement, saying the hospital redevelopment was his number one election issue and he was pleased that after years of delay it was at last happening.
Peter Hunt & Lyons Architects, a Perth-based firm, has also been appointed to work on the master planning for the creation of a business case for Esperance Hospital.
