SHOPPING centres face the threat of major legal payouts to crime victims because they have been miserly with security, a WA security firm warns.
Star Protection managing director Mark Smith said the retail sector often looked at security as a last resort and did not allocate sufficient funds to protect staff and customers.
Mr Smith said overseas trends showed a rising occurrence of shoppers who became victims of crimes such as bag snatching successfully suing centres for negligence.
He said WA compensation cases to date had been confined to people who suffered accidents while shopping but centres were increasingly targets for criminals.
