NewGen Power today announced it had been given the final go-ahead for the construction of its 320MW gas fired power station at Kwinana, south of Perth in Western Australia.
Trevor St Baker of NewGen Power said that the owners of the power station project had issued the final Commencement Notice to the contractors Alstom Power to begin construction of the $400 million project.
"Today's decision is great news for the State, because it enables Alstom to get on with the job of completing the power station in time for Western Power's need for extra base-load power in late 2008", Mr St Baker said.
"Alstom is a world leader in power station design and construction and is currently commissioning NewGen Power's 450MW gas-fired Braemar power station in Queensland".
"The NewGen Kwinana Power Station will combine leading edge technology with clean natural gas fuel to produce low cost, environmentally friendly and reliable power for Western Australian consumers", Mr St Baker said.
The NewGen Kwinana Power Station is being developed by Wambo Power Ventures, an equal partnership between ERM Group and Babcock & Brown.
Wambo Power Ventures won the tender to supply 320MW of base-load power to Western Power under a 25 year contract in August 2005.
Alstom and NewGen Power Kwinana will work closely with Industry Capability Network WA to maximize the opportunity for local contractors and suppliers to participate in this important project. Up to 250 jobs are expected to be created in the construction phase of the project, which is scheduled for 31 months.
