THE Industry Capability Network of WA and alumina producer Alcoa have launched an online directory for steel fabricators in response to the boom in construction projects in the state’s South West. The directory is designed to help steel fabricators take advantage of likely opportunities over the next few years. Alcoa engineering project manager Wayne Page said there was currently an information gap regarding steel fabricators and the new directory will allow them to lodge and update details of their capacity online at www.projectconnect.com . The directory initially is targeted at fabricators in the Peel and South West but will be available to firms nationally. The South West construction market is already busy, with Alcoa spending $440 million upgrading its Pinjarra refinery and BHP Billiton subsidiary Worsley Alumina spending $250 million at its refinery. Both companies are planning even bigger expansion projects next year. “This directory will assist Alcoa in its procurement planning if Wagerup Three proceeds,” Mr Page said. In addition, Alinta is building a series of power stations at Alcoa’s refineries and the mineral sands industry is also expected to generate work opportunities for steel fabricators.
