Talison Tantalum today announced that the company would be renamed Global Advanced Metals, as it focuses on resuming its mining operations in Western Australia.
The renaming forms part of the company's growth strategy following its recent separation from sister company Talison Lithium, now a public company.
"We are excited about the prospects that lie ahead for the company, but our first focus will be on reopening our Wodgina and Greenbushes operations," said Bryan Ellis, Chief Executive Officer of Global Advanced Metals.
The Wodgina and Greenbushes operations contain the world's largest known resources of tantalum used in the production of a wide range of hi-tech products, particularly electronics.
These operations were placed on care and maintenance during the global financial crisis
As the global financial crisis reaches a conclusion and several key nations emerge from recession, consumers are purchasing electronics again, resulting in renewed demand for tantalum.
Global Advanced Metals will continue to be an active member of the Electronics Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC), which is committed to helping the global electronics industry prevent the use of conflict mined tantalum from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in its products.
"Global Advanced Metals will continue to play a leading role in encouraging the electronics industry to purchase tantalum from responsible sources that do not engage in conflict mining," said Mr Ellis.
Mr Ellis, who was appointed Chief Executive last month, is optimistic about the future of Global Advanced Metals. "After a two year hiatus, we have a new name and a new strategy and we are ready to resume our position as the world's largest tantalum miner when the time is right," he concluded.
