Mirvac Group and Singapore-s Keppel REIT’s soon-to-be opened office tower at the Cathedral and Treasury Precinct has been officially named the David Malcolm Justice Centre.
The building's name, which will be home to new civil supreme courts and offices for the departments of the attorney general and treasury, is in memory of the late chief justice of Western Australia, David Malcolm.
Premier Colin Barnett said Mr Malcolm was a great Western Australian whose outstanding reputation would live on in one of Perth’s most important new buildings.
“Our state not only benefited from David Malcolm’s life-long commitment to justice, but also from his inspirational and generous support of charities and community organisations,” he said.
“It is fitting to honour his memory in this new centre, located on one of Perth’s most significant sites, Cathedral Square, where the Swan River Colony was founded in 1829.
“This outstanding building complements the historic and magnificently restored state buildings and the realisation of the shared vision to reactivate this historic area, with the new City of Perth Library and Cathedral Square, for the benefit of all Western Australians.”
Attorney General Michael Mischin said he was sure the former chief justice would have been pleased to see the state’s legal facilities progressing in this way.
“Extra facilities for the Supreme Court have been talked about for decades, and its new home will include five floors of civil court rooms, as well as six floors of judicial and staff offices, all designed to accommodate expected future growth,” Mr Mischin said.
“Combined with the newly opened State Administrative Tribunal nearby, this building completes Perth’s justice precinct and promises state-of-the-art judicial services.”
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Bill Marmion confirmed the David Malcolm Justice Centre fit-out was well under way, and scheduled for completion in July 2016.
“This fit-out is the biggest undertaken within a single state government project, incorporating the latest communications and security technology,” Mr Marmion said.
“It reflects the innovation and vision of chief justice Malcolm.”
