Fremantle and Bayswater will have new mayors while the City of Perth has elected two new councilors following local government elections over the weekend.
Brad Pettitt, dean of sustainability at Murdoch University and a member the Greens Party, was elected Fremantle mayor over the weekend, taking over from Peter Tagliaferri who stepped downto run for the seat of Fremantle as the Labor Party candidate.
Overall, six candidates were vying for the mayorship with the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce unofficially endorsing Mr. Pettitt and Jon Strachan.
Bayswater mayor Lou Magro become the highest profile of the state's mayor's to be ousted from office after the weekend elections. Mr. Magro lost his North Ward seat to former councillors Alan Radford and Graham Pittaway, who had lost their seats in the 2007 elections.
The city of Perth had eight candidates contesting the four councillor seats available for election. Mayor Lisa Scaffidi was not required to face the polls until the next general election in 2011.
Business owner Lyndon Rogers and property developer James Limnios won two of the seats while incumbents Judy McEvoy and Eleni Evangel retained the other two. Former lord mayor Chas Hopkins, hotelier John Demitrovski, local resident Karl Williams and corporate lawyer Peter Neil failed in their bids to be elected.
In Port Hedland Kelly Howlett upset sitting mayor Stan Martin.
Cockburn's Logan Howlett, Canning's Joe Della Donne, Mandurah's Paddi Creevey, and Bunbury's David Smith were all re- elected.
Claremont replaced retiring mayor Peter Olsen with Jock Barker.
Voter turnout across the state ranged from 35 per cent to 56 per cent.
