THE federal government has released an advisory handbook for independent contractors.
In launching the ‘Independent Contractors: contracts made simple’ handbook, Small Business Minister Nick Sherry said the quick reference guide had been developed to give independent contractors an easy fact finder for business.
“It has been produced in consultation with both metropolitan and regional independent contractors and the feedback is that the guide is an excellent resource,” he said.
Senator Sherry said the free handbook would help to boost business.
“Getting the contract right at the start is the best way to improve business relationships and avoid disputes down the track,” he said.
The government is hoping to aid in contractors’ negotiation of fees and working arrangements.
“Independent contractors are important to the Australian economy and the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates there are more than one million around the country,” Senator Sherry said.
“The government supports genuine independent contractors and the right to choose independent contracting as a career.
“And for the first time ever, an Australian government is providing much needed guidance on issues directly affecting independent contractors and their hirers to help save them time, money and headaches in their business dealings.
“The guides explain the rights and responsibilities of parties in an independent contracting relationship, but will also help those parties build strong business relationships and better manage risk.”
