Treasurer Eric Ripper today announced that Colin Murphy would be appointed acting auditor general of Western Australia.
Current auditor general Des Pearson will take up a position in Victoria at the end of September.
Mr Ripper said Mr Murphy was well qualified to take on the role and had previously been Acting Deputy Auditor General of WA in 2000.
After a period of Acting as Under Treasurer, Mr Murphy was appointed Acting Director General, Department of Justice in June last year.
Mr Murphy headed the department through the conclusion of the Mahoney Inquiry, and the split of the department to form two new departments. He has headed the new Department of the Attorney General since its creation in February.
Mr Murphy has extensive experience in finance and administration in both State and Commonwealth Government roles.
His substantive position is Executive Director (Finance) with the Department of Treasury and Finance.
He has previously worked for the Commonwealth Department of Finance in Perth and Washington DC, Murdoch University and for a number of State Government agencies.
Mr Murphy is an accountant with a Bachelor of Commerce from The University of WA. He is a Fellow of CPA Australia, a past State President and a member of CPA Australia's national board.
