Justice Graeme Murphy has been appointed as a new Judge of the Western Australian Court of Appeal following Justice Neville Owen's retirement.
Attorney General Christian Porter said Justice Murphy would bring extensive commercial litigation experience to his new post.
"Justice Murphy's career has encompassed many facets of the law, including trade practices, administrative, maritime, medical negligence, contractual disputes and statutory and constitutional interpretation," Mr Porter said.
Justice Murphy completed a Bachelor of Economics degree at the University of Sydney in 1978, followed by a Bachelor of Laws in 1980.
Before joining the Bar in 1994 he was a senior partner with a major national legal firm, Blake Dawson.
He was a director and secretary of WA Bar Chambers for several years as well as a member of the WA Bar Association's Disciplinary Committee.
Justice Murphy was appointed senior counsel in WA in 2003 and became a Judge of the Supreme Court in April 2009.
The Attorney General said that since Justice Murphy was appointed to the Supreme Court he had demonstrated his capacity and enthusiasm for judicial work.
"He has efficiently discharged a substantial caseload and the quality of his judgments is a reflection of the respect with which he is held in the judiciary and the wider legal profession," he said.
Justice Murphy will start his appointment on Tuesday, August 3.
