The Executive Director of the State Government's Drug and Alcohol Office, Terry Murphy, has been appointed Director General of the Department for Child Protection, Child Protection Minister Sue Ellery has announced.

Child Protection Minister Sue Ellery today welcomed the new Director General of the Department for Child Protection, Mr Terry Murphy.
Taking up his role today, Mr Murphy joins the Department for Child Protection from the Drug and Alcohol Office, where he has been executive director since 2005.
Mr Murphy has had a long career in the public service and a strong background in drug and alcohol services, policy and strategy.
He was executive director of the WA Drug Abuse Strategy Office and served as manager of the Task Force on Drug Abuse with the Department for the Premier and Cabinet. Mr Murphy worked for the former Department for Community Development in the early 1990s during which time he held different positions: assistant director of Community Based Services, Youth Justice Bureau; regional director in the Pilbara and Kimberley; and divisional manager responsible for the department's child protection, family support and juvenile justice programs.
Mr Murphy also has experience in the non-government sector and worked as a counsellor with Cyrenian House and as director of Palmerston Drug Research and Rehabilitation Association.
"Many people in the department already know Terry and I am sure all will join me in welcoming him to the role," Ms Ellery said.
The Minister thanked the Acting Director General Judy Hogben for her excellent work and leadership, especially during the transitional period from the Department for Community Development into two separate departments.
"Judy has contributed enormously to the department throughout over 20 years of service and I congratulate her on her achievements," she said.
