Mirvac Group's The Point, a residential and commercial precinct in Mandurah, has taken out top honours at this year's Urban Development Institute of Australia's awards while the Town of Claremont received a rising star gong.
The announcement is below:
On a spectacular night displaying the best property development that WA has to offer, 10 projects were recognized as the 'best of the best' at the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Awards for Excellence 2009.
The awards were presented at a masquerade gala event on Saturday 5 September featuring a Venetian Carnival theme.
Mirvac's The Point in Mandurah was the standout project receiving three awards including the coveted President's Award which recognizes the best development across all categories.
"The President's Award is not necessarily awarded every year," UDIA CEO Debra Goostrey said. "The judges only award it to a project that demonstrates excellence and stands out amongst its peers."
"The Point won in both the High Density and Masterplanned Development categories and was bestowed the President's Award due to its iconic nature and the fact it is providing social, economic and employment benefits to Mandurah while demonstrating best practice environmental management," Ms Goostrey said.
New kids on the block, the Town of Claremont, took out the Rising Star Award for their Lakeway Drivein Redevelopment.
The Rising Star is awarded to a developer that has never entered the Awards for Excellence previously.
"Lakeway is positioned in a prime location overlooking Lake Claremont on a site steeped in local history," Ms Goostrey said.
"The Town of Claremont has done a fantastic job in retaining 30% of the site for public open space and maintaining its natural features," Ms Goostrey said.
Broome's Januburu Six Seasons estate by LandCorp took out the Sustainable Urban Development Award due to the environmental aspects of the project as well as the collaboration with the local Yawuru people.
"Januburu has been developed following a native title agreement with the local Yawuru people whom have assisted with the planning and design of this unique project," Ms Goostrey said.
Landscape design and artwok reflects the indigenous 'six seasons' through endemic vegetation, a mosaic with companion seasonal planting, the 'Iwarra' wall and educational signage.
"All the award winners in 2009 reflect the commitment of the property industry to excellence and returning a dividend to the community," Ms Goostrey said.
"The criteria for all categories, including the sustainable and environmental award categories, are very stringent and only cutting edge projects have a chance at securing one of these high profile awards."
