Chris Ellison-helmed Mineral Resources will reportedly shed 100 white-collar jobs from its Perth headquarters due to the Yilgarn hub shutdown.
In June the miner revealed the hub would no longer be financially viable beyond December this year, citing its mine life and high costs associated with developing new resources in the region. The shutdown will impact 1,000 jobs in total.
At that time, MinRes told the stock market it would work with the affected workers on redeployment opportunities across its almost 800 vacancies, many of which are at its Onslow Iron project.
A MinRes spokesperson confirmed the job cuts from the miner's HQ in Perth, citing the ramp down of Onslow Iron construction and the end of exports from the Yilgarn hub as reasons for the "necessary reduction".
This round of redundancies reportedly impacts 100 roles, according to a report from the AFR. MinRes did not confirm the number.
“MinRes constantly reviews our organisational structure to ensure it is efficient and that our white-collar workforce reflects the requirements of our mining operations,” a MinRes spokesperson said.
“Given the ramp down of Onslow Iron construction and the cessation of exports from the Yilgarn Hub by the end of the year, there will be a necessary reduction in employees at head office.”
The iron ore miner's Yilgarn hub, in the Goldfields, encompasses its Koolyanobbing, Parker Range, Carina and Windarling mine sites. It transports the ore by rail to be exported through the Port of Esperance.
The ramp down of the operation will be staged. Four million wet metric tonnes still need to ve shipped by the end of the year, and mining operations will then transition into care and maintenance from early 2025.
Shutdowns and cutbacks in WA's nickel, iron ore, alumina and lithium sectors have led to the loss of almost 7,000 jobs this year.
The majority of which is the fallout of BHP’s plan to mothball its Nickel West operations, affecting an estimated 3,000 positions.
US-based Albemarle's decision last week to shut down parts of its Kemerton lithium hydroxide operation impacts about 300 local jobs.
