MetalsGrove Mining has kicked off a 10,000m auger drilling campaign at its Zuénoula gold project in Côte d’Ivoire. The program is set to provide the first subsurface test of six key drill targets across three prospect areas, which were refined following a successful soil sampling program that extended one target to 3.3km and delivered a peak soil assay of 1.324 g/t gold.
The drill bit has officially kissed the ground, kicking off MetalsGrove Mining’s significant 10,000-metre auger drilling campaign at its Zuénoula permit, which forms part of the company's 1315-square-kilometre Central West project in the fertile goldfields of Côte d’Ivoire.
The company says the program follows the all-important thumbs-up from local authorities and is designed to provide the first direct look at the bedrock potential lurking beneath a host of extensive surface gold anomalies.
Ongoing technical reviews and interpretation of recent infill soil sampling results have prompted the company to zero in on six drill targets spread across three principal prospects, Fifty-Five, Central and South East.
Recent 200m by 50m infill soil sampling at the Fifty-Five-prospect paid early dividends, extending the strike length of the key drill target T1 from 2.0km to 3.3km. The work also uncovered a cracking new peak soil assay of 1324 parts per billion (ppb) gold, underscoring the high prospectivity of the area.
The program will also test the highest-priority gold clusters. Focusing on drill targets T1, T3, T4 and T5 within the Fifty-Five and Central prospects, the augur will punch down to an average depth of five metres to target the upper saprolite horizon where management says residual gold signatures are best preserved.
This initial phase will see 503 holes drilled at the Fifty-Five prospect and another 472 holes at the Central prospect.
The company says drilling through the weathering profile will provide crucial geological information and help determine the relationship between the surface soil anomalies and the potential for underlying saprolite-hosted mineralisation.
Whilst the auger drill is turning, MetalsGrove is running a parallel 200m by 50m infill soil sampling program across drill target T6 at the South East prospect. Another round of sampling is also scheduled for drill target T2 in the northeastern part of the Fifty-Five prospect.
Designed to sharpen the geometry of its targets further and prioritise them for follow-up drilling, MetalsGrove says it has now received assay results for 3372 soil samples, with another 343 samples pending analysis in the lab. Additionally, 601 more soil samples are currently being collected.
MetalsGrove managing director and chief executive officer Lijun Yang said: "The commencement of auger drilling represents an important milestone in MetalsGrove's systematic exploration strategy at the Zuénoula prospect. Over the past 6 months, we have progressively advanced the project from regional reconnaissance through multiple phases of soil geochemistry, enabling us to refine our exploration focus to three principal prospects and six drill targets."
Zuénoula sits in elephant country, between several major deposits along the Abujar-Napié gold trend within the Oumé-Fetekro Birimian greenstone belt. These include the 4-million-ounce Abujar gold mine, 100km to the south and the 3.2-million-ounce Boundiali gold project, 237 km to the north.
With the auger program now underway, the company plans to use this first phase of subsurface testing to progressively refine its targets before advancing to more extensive aircore, reverse circulation and diamond drilling programs starting from late 2026.
MetalsGrove has lined up a steady stream of exploration news over the months ahead. If the auger drilling starts returning stronger gold, punters will likely be eager to see whether the growing trail of soil and auger results is simply smoke - or evidence of a much bigger gold fire burning beneath the surface.
