Based in the Faculty of Architecture at UWA, Simon Anderson was asked to design a light, warm, open and low-maintenance house addition that made use of the whole site while preserving garden space for the children.
“The house was a typical old house in Mt Hawthorn on a relatively small block, so the challenge was to improve the house while maximising space for the children,” Mr Anderson said.
“We added another storey, which maximises the northern exposure and garden and which is built in quite a different fashion from the older parts of the house.
“Everything is about the sun and the garden, which are the nice things about living.”
In presenting the RAIA Archicentre award the jury said the simple two-storey form of the new addition to this existing residence offered both a simple and elegant response to the needs of a growing family within the evident site constraints.
“The new living areas open up the residence to an abundance of winter sun and light from the north and provide a very effective connection to the external garden space,” the jury said.
