Leighton Holdings subsidiary John Holland and construction firm Macmahon Holdings have won a $340 million contract for onshore work on Darwin's Ichthys gas project.
A 50/50 joint venture between John Holland and Macmahon Holdings will carry out civil construction works associated with the onshore liquefied natural gas plant and associated facilities for the Ichthys project.
The works included access roads, earthworks, drainage and ground improvement, Leighton said in a statement.
The $US34 billion ($A32.63 billion) Ichthys gas project will pump gas from offshore Western Australia to Darwin for processing, and is being undertaken by Japanese company Inpex and French energy major Total.
Macmahon chief executive Nick Bowen said Macmahon’s experience in the Northern Territory was an important part of the joint venture’s success in securing the contract.
“Our locally based team and long-term presence in Darwin eliminate the need for a construction camp and directly support the client's desire to maximise the use of Australian products and services,” Mr Bowen said in a statement.
"Key project management positions have already been filled and the timely completion of other proejcts will enable staff to transfer across as this project ramps up.
“Macmahon has been part of the ongoing development of the Northern Territory and this award follows on from the recently announced Darwin supply base construction contract, in addition to other significant projects.”
The contract was awarded by the EPC contractor JKC Joint Venture (JGC Corporation, KBR, Chiyoda Corporation), following the final investment decision for the project by Inpex and Total on January 13.
At 9:10AM WST, Macmahon, whose major shareholder is Leighton Holdings, had slipped half a per cent, trading at 85.5 cents.
