Luxury at the bay

Quay West Resort Bunker Bay is a five-star resort consisting of 150 luxury villas located adjacent to the sheltered Bunker Bay beach in the Margaret River region.

The resort was designed collaboratively by Mirvac Fini’s in-house architects, HPA Architects, and resort specialists Grounds Kent Architects.

HPA practice director Chris Maher said the first main principle of the design was to provide a resort that was very much in keeping with the existing environment, and to use the site as a resource that could be added to.

“We used a palette of natural colours and materials that would work with the environment and location,” Mr Maher said.

“The resort is designed to be an enjoyable experience from the entry road, and a lot of local content was drawn upon in its construction.

“It is reasonably remote in terms of building facilities, and we utilised a lot of stone that was already on the site, as well as from neighbouring farms.

“The resort was designed to have minimal beach impact, and the natural landscape was fundamental in the design.”

The jury said the resort successfully addressed the many environmental concerns raised by the community at the site itself.

“Combining commercial function, quality accommodation with perceptive architecture, the architects have maintained a consistent and appropriate response to a vulnerable place,” the jury said.

“The skillful and fitting use of Colorbond materials have enhanced this project allowing the architecture to sensitively engage with the character of this coastal region.”
