LOCAL industries servicing the mining sector will be big winners following recent announcements of mining projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
This was the view expressed by Minister for Resource Develop-ment Colin Barnett in wake of the recent surge in mining activity.
“Clear signs are emerging that WA is now entering significant growth in minerals and petroleum activity,” Mr Barnett said.
Mr Barnett said it would not just be manufacturing that benefitted from the latest upsurge.
“Suppliers to the resource sector cover a wide range of industries,” Mr Barnett said
Last week, North Ltd gave the go-ahead for the $1 billion West Angelas project.
Local content levels of 85 per cent are planned for the mine,
railway and port facilities.
One WA supplier has been awarded a contract for the supply of 560,000 concrete sleepers for the 340 kilometre rail link.
Hamersley Iron has awarded a contract valued at $25 million for 240 new ore cars to Bradken, a subsidiary of listed Australian company Smorgen Steel.
Hamersley have also awarded contracts for the supply of reclaimers to local concern Krupp Engineering.
Hamersley managing director Sam Walsh said the company was pleased local industry was able to competitively service its needs.
“Local suppliers are proving themselves to be at the leading edge of world’s best practice on price, quality and efficiency,” Mr Barnett said.
