Literacy costs WA apprenticeships

Poor literacy and numeracy skills have been identified as a major reason why young people are increasingly opting out of trade apprenticeships in WA.

WA Department of Training and Employment’s professional development support program coordinator Ann Ison said recent research showed 35 per cent of trade students required support in reading and writing, while 64 per cent needed help with their numeracy.

“Many parents are telling us their children are positive about escaping school and gaining an apprenticeship or traineeship, only to encounter the same problems they experience in the education system,” Mrs Ison said.
