Developers are expected to compete strongly for a prime slice of riverfront land in East Fremantle, with the federal government putting the Leeuwin Barracks up for sale.
The Department of Defence today said there was no ongoing strategic or operational need for the 15-hectare property, which is located just metres from the banks of the Swan River.
Parliamentary Secretary to Defence Minister, Darren Chester, said the barracks was ageing and the costs of maintaining it were expensive and increasing.
“Selling the Leeuwin Barracks site will reduce Defence’s maintenance costs, and any proceeds will be reinvested in support of the Australian Defence Force,” Mr Chester said.
“The sale of Leeuwin Barracks supports government estate consolidation objectives and, at the same time, releases a useful parcel of land for purchase by the public.”
The sale is expected to reap tens of millions of dollars for the Department of Defence.
