Learning pays off

ALWAYS be ready to learn, says Anita Lawrence, of 46-year-old WA family-owned conglomerate All Boating Equipment and Master Engineering.

Master Engineering builds the Roadmaster brand of boat trailers.

The business was started by Mrs Lawrence’s grandfather Peter Long who turned his family’s wrought iron business to building boat trailers.

Mrs Lawrence said the trailer side of the business was very competitive.

“We’ve decided we’re not going to negotiate on quality,” she said.

“Our target market is the second-time trailer buyers. These people know what they want and what can go wrong and demand quality.

“I think we’re the only company in WA that uses computers to design boat trailers.

“Our major market is in the country areas. The boat owners know what their conditions are like and want something fairly heavy duty.”

The company’s trailers cater for boats weighing up to 4.5 tonnes – generally 26 to 28 footers.

“Always listen to your customers. This is a very competitive business and there is a lot happening out there,” Mrs Lawrence said.
