The Kiteracing Oceanic Championships begin off Leighton Beach in Fremantle today; with marine business advocate group Marine WA saying the event is a prime opportunity for local businesses to showcase their capabilities.
Marine WA chairman Mike Cippitelli said the group had partnered with MTU Detroit Diesel Australia to bring the championships to Perth.
The event will include seven top-10 international ranked kiteracers who will come up against the state’s best kitesurfers over the next five days.
Competitors include world number one Italian Riccardo Leccesse and Germany’s Florian Gruber, who is the second top-ranked world kitesurfer.
“The Kiteracing Oceanic Championships is an important sporting event for WA, with strong backing and sanctioning by the International Sailing Federation, and ownership by the Warren Jones Foundation,” Mr Cippitelli said.
“We are keen to encourage and support initiatives that help place Western Australia on the map.”
MTU Detroit Diesel Australia marine market development manager Matthew Reaume said the company was proud to co-partner the event, as well as showcase its marine product and service offering.
“We look forward to working closely with the Kiteracing team and Marine WA on a number of the fine points, ensuring that the championships and MTU’s marine engines are showcased ion the best possible way,” Mr Reaume said.
