The owner of Kingsway City Shopping Centre has cleared a planning hurdle to build a $33 million apartment component on the 17-hectare Madeley site.
The Metro Outer Development Assessment Panel yesterday unanimously approved Tah Land Pty Ltd's proposal to build 135 serviced apartments and 6 food tenancies at 182 Wanneroo Road.
Tah Land is the landowner, but is working with Lofte Property to deliver the eight-storey project, the development application shows.
The approved development comprises short stay accommodation within the shopping centre with the application revealing a long-term vision to expand the retail component and commercial offerings of Kingsway centre.
Nearly 75 per cent of the 62 submissions received during the public consultation period was opposed to short-stay accommodation on the Kingsway shops site.
But all panel members supported the proposed $33 million plan, with DAP deputy presiding member Eugene Koltasz saying the mixed use precinct was appropriate for the site.
“Whilst a number of submissions didn’t support short stay accommodation, the range of other policies encourage the uses proposed,” he said at the meeting.
“Given the number of district centres and regional centres that are incorporating residential into their environment, I think this is an appropriate use.”
Tah Land and Lofte Property engaged Urbis as town planner and DKO Architecture for the design.
Kingsway City Shopping Centre opened in 1996.
