The other day we graphed weekly levels of coffee usage, since our new cafe was installed in-house - just to see.
So we feel complete affinity with the Australian Bureau of Statistics' local office and its efforts to showcase its ability in Stats Talk WA.
Take, for example, the report into the socio-economic backdrop of the WA Football League clubs based on their suburb of residence.
The ABS looked at all sorts of demographic information such as household data, income and volunteering based on each footy club's home ground, which is obvious for Claremont, East Freo, East Perth, South Freo and Subiaco but more obscure for others like Peel Thunder (Mandurah), Perth (Lathlain), Swan Districts (Bassendean) and West Perth (Joondalup).
There was a lot of spurious links between club performance and this data. For instance, the ABS suggested that South Freo's "bruising no-nonsense style of play may have resulted in ... the highest percentage of physiotherapists and massage therapists".
One trivia item the ABS found was that the clubs located in higher socio-economic areas were more likely to have better access to volunteers.
They pointed out that disadvantaged Mandurah had less people to slice the oranges, even though the club was called Peel.
Ah, so much data and nothing to do.
