KAPP engineering was named WA business of the year at the WA Telstra Business Awards held this week.
KAPP was started in 2005 by four engineers aged in their 20s with no capital and little experience.
Five years later, the Balcatta-based industrial automation and process control services company is managing a client base of 200 from its own premises, with 75 per cent of its business coming from repeat customers.
KAPP also won the business owner micro business award, while medical equipment repair company Electro Medical Group won the MYOB small business award.
Electro Medical Group was established in WA in 2003 and expanded to South Australia in 2008, servicing clients such as the Department of Defence, Australian Red Cross and St John Ambulance as an authorised agency for major equipment manufacturers.
Handley Surveys was awarded the Panasonic Australia medium business award for its surveying work in the Pilbara, operating with a perfect health, safety and environment record since its inception in the market in 1976.
Modular partitioning system company Quicklock Partitions won the AMP innovation award for its development of an alternative office fit-out, using reusable, portable and easily installed walls.
Mount Hawthorn-based bookstore and cafe The Bodhi Tree was recognised with the Sensis social responsibility award for aiming to raise consciousness and wellbeing through its provision of philosophy courses and healthy food.
The WA winners will be judged against category winners from other states and territories in the lead up to the national Telstra Business Awards on August 20.
