Federal Liberal Party deputy leader Julie Bishop has been recruited to the board of the West Coast Eagles, the first ever female director for the football club.
The WCE website reported chairman Mark Barnaba said he had recently approached Ms Bishop about the directorship and was "ecstatic" when she accepted.
Ms Bishop said she was looking forward to being involved with the club.
"The West Coast Eagles is one of the strongest clubs in the AFL and, as a long time supporter and the club's local Federal member of parliament, I am delighted to accept the offer of a position on the board," Ms Bishop said.
"There is an impressive range of business, management and sporting administration skills on the current board and I look forward to making a contribution in helping the club return to its rightful place at the top of the ladder."
Western Australian Football Commission chairman Neale Fong said Ms Bishop's appointment marks an exciting time for the football industry in WA.
"[The appointment] reflects well on the status of West Australian football," Mr Fong said.
"We are confident that an appointment of this nature will assist the West Coast Eagles to remain a force in the AFL."
