A development assessment panel has approved a six-storey public ward and a two-storey theatre expansion at Joondalup Health Campus, estimated to cost $67.2 million.
The Metro Outer Joint Development Assessment Panel today approved a proposal to build a new six-storey medical ward and a two-storey theatre addition to the health campus on Shenton Avenue in Joondalup.
The site is owned by North Metropolitan Health Service but the campus is operated by Ramsay Health Care under a public-private partnership agreement with the state government.
Joondalup Health Campus comprises a 146-bed private hospital and an adjoining public hospital.
The $67.2 million proposal is part of a bigger $256.7 million expansion of the public component of the hospital, which the federal government has contributed $158 million towards.
A Ramsay Health Care spokesperson said Joondalup Health Campus was mid-way through the major expansion.
"This project has already delivered 12 much-needed emergency department beds, a specialised behavioural assessment unit, a refurbished emergency assessment unit, a 768-bay multi-storey public car park, more staff car parking and upgraded back of house facilities," the spokesperson said.
"A new 102-bed mental health unit will open soon, paving the way for the demolition of the existing mental health unit and commencement of a 112-bed public ward block.
"By 2025, the hospital will also have a new theatre and cardiac catheterisation lab.
"The expansion enables Joondalup Health Campus to continue delivering vital, high-quality healthcare for WA patients."
According to the development application, the proposed theatre and back of house expansion will be integrated with Block F of the existing hospital.
The application, prepared by Silver Thomas Hanley Architecture, said the proposed public ward would be built at the previous mental health care ward, known as Block K.
“The proposal will deliver an additional 46 beds, and further 60 future shell beds, and deliver numerous direct and secondary jobs to Joondalup Health Campus and the wider community,” the application said.
“As part of the growth on campus a new public ward block is proposed to be constructed, comprising clinical (occupational therapy, cardiac care unit, surgical ward), administrative, shell wards and plant space over six levels.
“There will also be an expansion of current theatre, recovery and clinical spaces on level one and stores and back of house services on the ground floor.”
In May, the JDAP approved a separate $77 million seven-storey expansion to the private hospital portion of the campus.
