Low-cost carrier Jetstar has today launched a new direct Singapore-to-Perth service, which is expected to boost the the number of Asian tourists visiting the state.
Tourism Minister Sheila McHale welcomed the new service, starting in December this year, and is the third international destination to be serviced by Jetstar from Perth, with services to Jakarta and Bali to start in October this year.
"In its short history, Jetstar has had tremendous success in boosting tourism by offering competitive fares and attracting visitors who had not travelled widely before," Ms McHale said.
"This additional service by Jetstar between Singapore and Perth will trigger even more growth in the Asian market as travelers take advantage of competitive prices.
"Singapore is our second largest international market with more than 66,000 visitors in the past 12 months, spending a massive $221million in WA.
"Asians love to travel, especially in short breaks, and the emergence of low-cost carriers and their extensive networks throughout Asia has introduced a whole new range of destinations and markets."
The minister said tourism markets across the globe were experiencing challenges in aviation.
"I congratulate Jetstar on its recognition of this important market by introducing a new service between Singapore and Perth during difficult times for the aviation industry," Ms McHale said.
"Air access is critical for WA's tourism industry and this opportunity will help capitalise on a rapidly developing aviation segment.
"Perth will now link with Jetstar's extensive networks in the Asia-Pacific region, exposing WA to vital new Asian markets."
